Why is it that moms so often put their own health aside to
care for others? As a working mother of
three young children, I can certainly relate.
However, as a physical therapist, I can tell you that you don’t have to
suffer with pain and dysfunction that often creeps up during pregnancy and in
the years following!
One of the most common complaints during pregnancy is back
pain. A physical therapist can assess
the source of the pain and treat it appropriately. Treatment may include massage or mobilization,
and we will teach you exercises that are specific to the pregnant body and your
needs. We will also teach you strategies
to help keep you moving day-to-day throughout your pregnancy.
Physical therapy can also address other complaints related
to pregnancy, including carpal tunnel syndrome, neck pain, rib pain, and leg
pain, to name a few. Sometimes, issues can
occur years after bearing children as moms return to regular exercise with a
body that has new muscle imbalances from pregnancy and delivery.
Even in the absence of pain, a physical therapist can be a
great resource for your prenatal or post-partum exercise. The American Congress of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists recommends, in the absence of medical or obstetric complications,
30 minutes or more of moderate exercise per day during pregnancy and
post-partum. The benefits of exercise
during pregnancy include reduction of swelling, improved energy, improved
posture, improved strength and endurance, and it helps prepare for labor and
delivery. We have extensive training in
body mechanics, movement analysis, and exercise prescription, so we can help you
understand the most appropriate exercises for you.
